I have a set of 10X43 ED2's and love those! The 8X42's should come in handy for the closer work and deer hunting. Looking forward to using them this fall and am impressed by the quality for the price. Zen-Ray is all I carry now after trying a number of different brands. (Posted on 8/2/13)

I received these binoculars promplty after ordering. To say I am impressed is an understatement. I had a pair of nikon monarchs stolen, so I needed a replacement. I read that the birders loved zen-ray, so I thought there must be a reason. I ordered the vista 8x42, and am glad I did! Will go to zen-ray again. (Posted on 8/1/13)

I was skeptical at first because I could not find much info on Zen Ray outside of their website. After shopping around for optics for a trip to Alaska I took a chance on Zen Ray due to the number of positive reviews here and from many folfs on the cruise boards. Having sampled everything available in the big box stores for the money, I am more than pleased with the value on these optics. Very sturdy, crisp, clear, bright and the lens covers are wonderful. If you are hesitant, don't be. Try them out and you'll be suprised. (Posted on 7/9/12)

I bought these binoculars after doing some internet searching for a good set of travel binoculars, and was very happy with their performance. Nice and bright, sharp image. Barrel distortion is pretty severe, but I suppose that is to be expected. These will not disappoint! (Posted on 1/26/12)

  6. Superb Optics for a Superb Value Review by slackard

The Vista 8x42 was a gift for my dad who is convinced there is no difference between 100$ glass and 1000$ glass. No matter if I explain the technicals or not he refuses to actually SEE the difference. That is he refused (past tense) until I brought him to GanderMtn and sampled the various Swaro & Nikon offerings they had on hand.

He had been certain that any $25-$50 pair would suit his needs, however he was immediately struck by the AFOV and clarity offered by the high dollar Swaro's, but about passed out when he saw the sticker. Then I had him sample some of the new Monarch and Prostaff glasses from Nikon which are a best-match for the VISTA.

Technically speaking the Vista with its standard glass and Silver mirror, should fall between the Nikon Prostaff7 (aluminum mirror) and the new Monarch (now with the dielectric mirror). However, with sticker prices of $209 & $299 respectively, the prostaff7 and new monarch are both significantly overpriced compared to the Vista, which is priced at a cool $129.

While sampling the Prostaff and Monarch with my dad I didnt have a tripod and 3-4 hours to nit-pick and explain the optical differences. I also hadn't ordered the Vistas yet for comparison, but in the store the Prostaff and Monarch were almost entirely indeclinable as far as image quality and brightness. In a well lit store both performed admirably given their price points. I think the only place someone might begin to see differences would be in low-light, where the Dieletric Monarch should have the edge over the Prostaff's aluminum mirror.

Now, knowing I wouldnt be buying nikon glass, I was simply trying to get my dad a feel for what 'good' binoculars are really like (good is of course relative). Although I knew he liked the Nikon offerings he would have thrown a fit if I actually purchased them at their market prices.

    Enter Zen-Ray

After a lot of research I personally opted for the new Zen ED3 for my own personal glass (ED3 is a superb offering, see my review on the ED3 10x42 page), but my dad, frugal as he is, needed something that was also optically superb, but also wouldn't induce a stroke when he opened the gift. The Vista series was offering nearly everything the Nikons had at way less than half the price.

The silver mirror on the Vista performs great. For sure better than the Nikon Prostaff7 aluminum coated counterpart. The prostaff produced images that were muddy and decidedly not brilliant in color. Whereas the Vista achieved color brilliance nearly equal to my ED3s in a side by side tripod comparison.

The Vista 8x42 was slightly but noticeably less bright than my ED3 10x42 in daylight, but given the technical differences between the ED3 and Vista this was to be expected.

Clarity on the Vista was also superb compared to the Nikon offerings, and is approaching equality with the ED3. There is noticeable edge blur (due to the nature of spherical focal planes) in both the Nikon offerings as well as the Vista, but was noticeably less on the Vista glass (could be partially due to the larger apparent field of view (AFOV) on the Vistas. The nikon offerings are published at 50deg AFOV. The vista AFOV is not published but appears to be greater than 50deg, and less than the massive 63deg on my ED3s.)

For the money, the Vista is an unbeatable bargain. Optically the glass meets and exceeds every industry rival and at less than half the price. If you truly want high quality glass without sticker shock the Vista is the clear path to happiness. By starting with a low price and providing outstanding optical performance, Zen-Ray has created an unbeatable bargain in a very tightly niched category of binocular optics.

Finally, if you're going to nit-pick you'll say Silver isn't as good as dielectric, but then all you need to do is look at the sticker price and your high-horse attitude wont mean much. Being argon charged the silver will not tarnish over time, and seriously, 98% transmission for silver vs 99.7% for dielectric--you're splitting hairs!! LOOK AT THE PRICE FOR CRIPES SAKE!

Xmas is still on the way so I'll have to wait a bit for my Dad's reaction to this gift, but I know I got the very best combination of low price and quality optics available anywhere--so he wont be disappointed!

Side note: At the time of my purchase a freebee 8x25 monocular was included with the Vista. Free is free, period! The 8x25 monocular is a neat promotional toy, but is simply not in the same category as the remainder of ZenRay's offerings. It works, and isn't junk, and that's all I can say for sure. But hey, free is free, and now the kiddies have a new toy! (Posted on 11/30/11)

I wear eyeglasses and the eye relief was superb with the twist-down eyecups. Comfortable feel in the hand along with good balance, smooth focus knob (diopter adjustment), a good wide field of view and awesome clarity. I would recommend these binoculars to anyone who wants premium quality binoculars at agreat price. I have personally gifted several pair of Zen-Ray binoculars to my friends because of my conviction that they are the best. Thank you Zen-Ray for bringing us affordable high quality. 9. Excellent Binos for the price!!!!!! Review by Josh

I have always had binos that were cheap crap and I always had problems with focus among just clarity. I have looked through some more expensive binoculars that I was very impressed with, one tthat comes to mind was wind river binos a friend of mine has. All I will say he payed about 3 times what I did and the Zen Ray 8x42 Vista binos blew his out of the water! I have had them out for the last 3 weeks in pouring rain, low light and very sunny weather and they performed flawlesly. I did have fog up problems but that is to be expected with most all binoculars unless they are treated for this, it was an easy fix just wiping the glass dry. Also I have always had 10x binos and they are hard to hold steady the 8X were very solid and a larger field of vision, you can also see anything you could see with the 8x you could with the 10x. All in all this is the best binoculars I have ever owned and to top that off I got a free minocular when I bought my zen rays that out shined all of the minoculars I have looked through and most of the binoculars I have looked through. My suggestion to you would be if you are on a limited budget as I was go with the Vista binos you can not go wrong, they are a great product! I do hope that there warranty is as good as there product if anything arises.
I give zen ray binos 10 out of 10 stars!!! (Posted on 10/17/11)

Most binoculars I have owned have been gifts, where I had no input on features, specifications or pricing. Buying the Vista 8X42 is my first optics purchase and they blow away any set of binoculars I have used in the past. I'm extremely satisfied with the value, only problem is now I'm curious as to just how good a set of binoculars can be. Upgrades might be in the future. (Posted on 7/5/11)

We bought these for my step-dad for a retirement present and we are very pleased. These binoculars are amazing. You cannot, I repeat, cannot find a better pair of glass for the money, period! Thery are crisp from edge to edge with no distortion, they are very easy to use and would be an excellent purchase for bird watching for even the serious birder. I can't wait to purchase a pair of the ED2's for myself! (Posted on 6/30/11)

While we have not yet put these to use in Alaska, we have used locally. Very impressed with the clear optics. We both wear glasses and have no problem using these. I was a little shy to order these without having experience with the product name, but was quite pleased with my purchase upon arrival. I called the company first and my phone call was returned within 30 minutes by a polite gentleman, enthusiastic to steer me towards the right choice for my specific needs. I have been using a Bausch & Lome 9x22 through my kitchen window (bird watching) and I think now that I have my ZenRays....those will see very little use! The quality materials, the heft and most importantly....how great everything looks when viewing through them...makes these an exceptional value and product. I purchased these for an upcoming Alaska Cruise, but will be getting a lot of home use with them!
The free monocle is a nice touch, but .... well....I will give it to my kids. (Posted on 5/2/11)

My archery partner got a pair of Vortex diamondback binoculars. I was quite impressed with that one and was planning to get a pair for myself too. After reading some reviews on various internet forum, I realized that this VISTA binoculars is the same rebadged diamondback binoculars. Placed an order on Friday and received it on the following Monday. That's a fast service if you ask me. Took it to my friend's house to compare it with his diamonback. Yep, same glass. He paid $229 and I paid $129 with faster service. Folks, you guys are doing an awesome job making the binoculars affordable. Thank you. (Posted on 4/21/11)

I had the chance to compare them in the field against two different pairs of Leupold Wind Rivers and they were clearer and brighter.

The sharpness made picking out colors easy.

For the price they are hands down the best $100 pair of binoculars on the market and compare well against units at least twice the price.

Two thumbs up! (Posted on 4/6/11)

I got this pair of binos as part of a special promotion, and so far it does not disappoint. I've left it in the car as a pair of backups. Its optics is still of a very good quality. If you start using it at the beginning of the day, you won't miss anything throughout the day. Overall a good pair for a beginner or or for use as a backup. My 12 year old cousin fell in love with it because of its size, quality and cool "military" colours! (Posted on 3/5/11)

heard many good reviews on the Zen-Ray ED2 binoculars. But not many reviews on VISTA binoculars. We need to replace our aging Nikon Monarch that in desperate need of new eyecup. Instead of trying to repair them, we decided to give VISTA a try. It turned out that we are shocked to see the $130 VISTA is brighter and sharper than my $240 Monarch. I like 8x format, perfect for shorebird watching. It holds steady. Ergnomics is also very good. I can hold if for half hour without break. For the money, it's a very good bargain. (Posted on 3/2/11)

Bought this pair for husband's birthday. We will take them to our Africa Safari trip. After reading reviews on the birding sites, we decided to give it s try. After it was delivered last Friday, we have used it extensively for a couple of hiking trips. It is light weight at 24oz. It is very easy to my eyes, without much adjustment to get used to it. I initially was afraid of the double vision with our previous Bushnell binoculars. This one has none. We are so happy with the purchase that we ordered another pair so we don't have to share just one pair for this trip. -LB (Posted on 2/27/11)
